Getting meld to work in Mac

After installing meld via ports
$ sudo port install meld
launching meld used to crash every single time

mini@Android$meld
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display "/tmp/launch-BqCi3I/org.x:0".
Dynamic session lookup supported but failed: launchd did not provide a socket path, verify that org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist is loaded!

self._gconf.add_dir(rootkey, gconf.CLIENT_PRELOAD_NONE)
glib.GError: Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Not enough memory)

Here is the fix (not don't run as sudo)
mini@Android$launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchDaemons/org.freedesktop.dbus-system.plist
mini@Android$launchctl load -w /Library/LaunchAgents/org.freedesktop.dbus-session.plist

Now, meld will start as expected.

2 utilities that will help me

1. Error free copy
If we are moving/copying stuff from different sources, the copy will bail out upon error upon encountering a unreadable chunk of data. It is a profound problem particularly when the copy involves huge amts of data and the several chunks of un-readable data spread across.

2. Image organiser
Having the images are different sources and taken at different camaras will really put strain on manual organization of the files. Better would be a small ultility which will recursively find the images, move them to central location, remove multiple images, sort them according to the order of date in directories.

Deluged by virtualization

I have been trying to get hands on a Linux machine in vain for the last few months. I didn't wanna have dual boot machines. A seemsless switch like channels in a TV is what i really needed. Virtualization, is the channel switching solution. I wanted to use XFIG, LYX and latex2html(not a big motivation for using linux, but anyways). Currently there are 2 "prime" products, namely microsoft VirtualPC and vmware warkstation. The only reason I choose VirtualPC, was their 45 day eval period and $120+ price tag as opposed to 30 day from vmware and $180+. Microsoft(MS) is known to be an under-dog in almost everything they have done till now who ultimately become the market leader. So, few years from now, MS and vmware will be arch rivals (there are already i believe). So, I am hoping I have made the right choice amoung the 2.

Interestingly, VPC related documentation in the MS website now-where mentions (forget documentaions of how to install linux or make it work) the support for linux which was very disappointing. Google grps came to my rescue and having read several postings and links ..

http://vpc.visualwin.com/
http://vpc.visualwin.com/Notes/FedoraCore.3.Final.html
where the most helpful.

The installation is seemless if one can really read the instructions with patience. with Linux (though I like it), whenever whatever I tried for the first time, I never got it right (which made it all more exciting, when u finally get it to work). Now I have win and linux talking to each other.

The shared folder works only if the Guest OS is Win family (which sucks). I wish they had it for linux as well. I use FTP now .. Docs say Samba can be used as well. I am yet to read about it.

you get what u pay for

Today i got canon SD300. It took me nearly a month to decide on which to buy and another 3 months to find the right deal to buy one. The camera itself rocks. It small, fitz into the palm, sleek, got a bigger LCD screen. Took some images, the quality is great, I am happy with the quality with the ones i took. 4MP is kind of optimal for me as i am not gonna print a poster to stick up in the wall. Overall i would say it 4 1/2 of 5.

One more *item* i got was entempo spirit 20, well it sucks big time. Itz *cheap*{ $100}, bulky, bad/pathetic design, heavy. The cover that comes along sucks. It made of cheap material, and can hardly survive a scratch. Well I am sure it will get torn away. The feature set boasts of HDD, mp3 player, voice recorder. Somehow, the thing i liked was longer battery life. Even that needs to be tested. What pissed me the most was the voice recorder wudn't work. I already has ultra whcih i bought during thanksgiving and that not longer works(again one more cheap product) I probably will have return it, spend a lot more and get myself an IPOD. Itz better a spend more and enjoy rather than save some bucks here and there to spend the time later typing rant and raves.

You get what you pay for !!
